A TYPICAL DAY DURING THE OLYMPIC PERIOD
Everything You Need to Know!
- As soon as possible after arriving in Whistler, please check into the Whistler Heli-Skiing Store in the Carleton Lodge to confirm your reservation and ski date.
- You must check in 24 hours before you fly, but preferably as soon as you arrive in Whistler.
At that time you will be required to sign a release of liability waiver. All members of your party who are heli-skiing must be present to sign their waiver.* You may also arrange your rental powder skis or snowboard, if required, at this time.
- The Whistler Heli-Skiing staff will advise you of the weather conditions for the next few days. If necessary, you may change your reservation at this time, depending upon space availability.
- As has been the case at all recent Olympics, there will be various security checks around the Whistler area.
- From January 29 to March 3, 2010, all heli-skiers will be required to go through security screening at the Whistler Heliport.
- In order to meet security requirements you will need to have photo identification: passport, driver’s license, or other government issued identification. Non-Canadians must have their passport; Canadian citizens must have government-issued photo ID such as their driver’s license.
- Do not carry any articles that would not normally be allowed through airport screening such as: knives, sharp or pointed objects, or unnecessary metal objects. You should wear snow boots and carry your ski or snowboard boots to avoid having to remove them during screening. All backpacks will have to be examined, but avalanche rescue gear such as a shovel and probe will be allowed. Whistler Heli-Skiing will provide avalanche transceivers for everyone. It would be better if you do not bring your own avalanche transceiver as you will have to remove it for screening.
- The better prepared you are for the screening process, the faster and easier the screening will be.
- For complete information on what is allowed and not allowed please go to this website: http://www.catsa-acsta.gc.ca/english/pack_smart.html
- Marijuana and other recreational drugs are illegal in Canada. During the screening process, anyone found carrying an illegal substance will be subject to arrest. There will be an RCMP officer on the premises.
Meeting times:
- 8:15 am: All guests requiring rental to check in at the Whistler Heli-Skiing store
- 8:30 am: All other guests, regular check in time at the Whistler Heli-Skiing store.
- If your heli ski day is cancelled due to weather or snow conditions, you will be telephoned between 7:30 am and 8:00 am. If you do not have a phone call by 8:00 am, please report to the Heli Ski store at 8:15 or 8:30 as required.
- After reporting to the Whistler Heli-Skiing store you will be either be directed to the ski rental area, or you will stay in the Whistler Heli-Skiing store where your guide will introduce himself and assemble your group. You will have a heli ski introduction. We have guides that speak English, Japanese, German, and French. If you need assistance in those languages, please ask.
- After the group is assembled you will walk with your guide to the waiting Whistler Heli-Skiing buses for the drive to the Whistler Heliport.
- At the Heliport you will first go through security. Afterwards you will be given a transceiver and instructions in its use and receive additional instruction about the helicopters. The first group will fly at approximately 10:00 am.
- The guide will choose the best ski area for the day. He will take into consideration the wind, temperature, and new snowfalls prior to making his decision.
- You will ski with your guide all day.
- Mountain lunch is provided on the hill.
- The Whistler Heli-Skiing professional photography staff captures one of your runs on video and still pictures. Videos and photographs are available in the Bell 205 packages only. Smokers please bring a container to contain ashes and cigarette butts.
- No smoking is permitted near the helicopter.
- Due to the heightened security and lack of parking areas, there will be no Apres Party during the Jan 29 to Mar 3 Olympic period.
